What Moved the Tape

Broadcom’s capital warning

Tan spoke on a panel in Singapore on Monday. He said Broadcom is working through wafer and memory shortages and that money will be the largest limit on AI development.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan flagged similar concerns. But, both executives stayed bullish on near-term demand for AI computing.

MONDAY'S MESSAGE FROM THE BROADCOM CEO
Bottlenecks being overcome ......... wafers and memory
Constraint named ................... capital and its cost
Longer-run test .................... return on investment
Near-term demand view .............. still strong

CXMT’s cell-structure progress

CXMT President Cao Kanyu said at an industry event in Shanghai that the company made key progress on a 4F² memory cell. CXMT plans to introduce DDR5 RDIMM server memory based on the design by the end of 2026.

Mainstream DRAM uses a 6F² cell today. SK Hynix unveiled its own 4F² roadmap in 2025, and Samsung reportedly targets sub-10 nanometer production with the design by 2028.

CELL AREA MATH
6F² cell area ...................... 6 units
4F² cell area ...................... 4 units
Cells per same area ................ 6 / 4 = 1.5x (up to 50% more density)

A denser cell raises the ceiling on bits per wafer. Yield, power and cost per bit decide whether that ceiling turns into revenue.

Why the selling hit hard

The S&P 500 closed Monday at 7,807.24, within half a percent of its 52-week high of 7,844.52. The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.24%.

OpenAI’s disclosure on October 8 had already reset revenue expectations across AI suppliers. On Monday, SanDisk fell more than 6% and Lumentum fell almost 10%.

PRESSURE POINTS BEHIND THE SELLING
1. Funding ........ capital cost named as the AI constraint
2. Competition .... CXMT 4F² progress and a 10% DRAM share
3. Valuation ...... indexes near highs with the 10-year at 5.24%

Broadcom: Where Demand Meets Financing

The order book in numbers

Broadcom’s fiscal third quarter delivered revenue of $29.6 billion, up 86%. AI semiconductor revenue reached $16.7 billion, up 221%, and the company guided fourth-quarter AI revenue to $21.7 billion.

On the earnings call, Tan said Broadcom has secured supply to double AI revenue to about $115 billion in fiscal 2027. He sees a line of sight to $230 billion in fiscal 2028 and expects non-GAAP earnings per share above $30 that year.

BROADCOM AI SEMICONDUCTOR REVENUE
Fiscal Q3 2026 (actual) ............ $16.7B, up 221% year over year
Fiscal Q4 2026 (guide) ............. $21.7B, up 236% year over year
Fiscal 2026 (outlook) .............. about $58B
Fiscal 2027 (outlook) .............. about $115B
Fiscal 2028 (line of sight) ........ about $230B
Two-year total ..................... $345B (management rounds to $350B)
AI share of revenue ................ 56% in Q3, 62% in Q4 guide

Who funds the gigawatts

Broadcom’s customers need money before their data centers earn it. In June, Broadcom set up an XPV financing platform with Apollo and Blackstone to enable more than 20 gigawatts of compute for OpenAI and Anthropic by the end of 2028.

The first $35 billion tranche closed for Anthropic’s 1 gigawatt deployment. Broadcom says outside partners underwrite these assets and that it may give modest residual value guarantees.

Broadcom has also launched a $60 billion debt financing for Anthropic’s build-out and held early talks on more than $50 billion for OpenAI. Morgan Stanley’s estimate of $1.5 trillion external financing through 2028 frames the wider need.

FINANCING YARDSTICK
First tranche ...................... $35B for 1 gigawatt
Platform target .................... more than 20 gigawatts by end of 2028
Straight-line scaling .............. 20 x $35B = $700B
Share of $1.5T external need ....... about 47%

Future tranches will carry different terms, so the $700 billion figure works as a scale marker.

OpenAI’s revenue reset

OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue approached $50 billion at the end of September. The earlier figure near $70 billion reflected a different counting method, and no sales disappeared.

A financing above $50 billion equals roughly one year of that run rate. Lenders are funding hardware ahead of the revenue meant to repay it.

OPENAI VERSUS THE FINANCING
Annualized revenue (end of September) ........ approaching $50B
Financing under discussion ................... more than $50B
Ratio ........................................ about 1.0x one year of revenue

What higher rates do to the math

The Fed raised its target range to 3¾ to 4 percent on September 16. Sixteen members expect another hike by year-end.

Broadcom’s own debt of $59.6 billion carries a 4% average coupon. Its interest bill stays small next to $20.1 billion of non-GAAP operating income in a single quarter.

INTEREST SENSITIVITY
$60B facility, each 1 point ......... $0.60B per year
$50B facility, each 1 point ......... $0.50B per year
Both facilities, each 1 point ....... $1.10B per year

BROADCOM'S OWN DEBT
Gross fixed-rate debt ............... $59.6B at 4% average coupon
Annual interest at 4% ............... about $2.38B
Same debt at 5.24% .................. about $3.12B
Added cost .......................... about $0.74B per year

The exposure sits with the labs’ funding capacity and with any residual guarantees. Broadcom’s balance sheet carries $24.0 billion of cash and the company produced $13.7 billion of free cash flow in the quarter.

Memory Chips: A Share Fight Inside a Supercycle

Records on every income statement

Micron posted $54.23 billion in revenue for fiscal Q4, against $11.32 billion a year earlier. It guided to $61.5 billion for the next quarter.

Samsung’s preliminary Q3 operating profit reached 107.4 trillion won, a 55.1% margin on 195 trillion won of sales. CXMT’s first-half revenue grew 873.64% to 150.31 billion yuan.

LATEST REPORTED RESULTS
Micron fiscal Q4 revenue ........... $54.23B (up 379% from $11.32B)
Micron fiscal Q1 guide ............. $61.5B plus or minus $1.5B (up 13.4% from Q4)
Samsung Q3 operating profit ........ 107.4T won (up 782.5% from 12.17T won)
Samsung Q3 versus Q2 ............... up about 20% (89.49T won in Q2)
CXMT first-half revenue ............ 150.31B yuan (up 873.64%)
CXMT first-half net profit ......... 77.61B yuan

The share table

Q2 data shows CXMT at 10% of DRAM revenue, up from 4% a year earlier. The three incumbents’ combined share fell from 94% to 87% while the market grew 385%.

SK Hynix ceded share even after signing long-term agreements early, with Samsung and Micron gaining on both sides. Micron’s DRAM share rose from 22% to 24%.

DRAM REVENUE SHARE, Q2 2025 TO Q2 2026
Samsung ............................ 33% to 38%
SK Hynix ........................... 39% to 25%
Micron ............................. 22% to 24%
CXMT ............................... 4% to 10%
Top three combined ................. 94% to 87%
Market growth ...................... up 385% year over year

HBM REVENUE SHARE, Q2 2025 TO Q2 2026
SK Hynix ........................... 64% to 50%
Samsung ............................ 15% to 33%
Micron ............................. 21% to 18%

SK HYNIX REVENUE CHECK
Q2 2025: 39% of a market sized 1.00 ..... 0.39
Q2 2026: 25% of a market sized 4.85 ..... 1.21
Revenue multiple ........................ about 3.1x

SK Hynix gave up 14 points of DRAM share and still roughly tripled revenue. Share loss and record sales can coexist while the market expands this fast.

What CXMT can and cannot change

CXMT’s gains trace to conventional DRAM shortages, because incumbents steered capacity toward HBM. CXMT itself expects the supply shortage to persist, which supports its volumes in the near term.

Goldman Sachs projects CXMT could supply half of China’s DRAM demand by 2028. That projection points to a large domestic base for CXMT.

Policy adds a second variable. CXMT sued the Pentagon over its inclusion on a U.S. list of companies accused of aiding China’s military.

CXMT CHECKPOINTS
Year-end 2026 ...................... DDR5 RDIMM products on the 4F² design
Policy ............................. outcome of the Pentagon list lawsuit
2028 ............................... Samsung's reported sub-10nm 4F² target
